Sure if you’ve 100k followers, spur of the moment live streams might attract an audience anyway. But why risk?

Think about creating posts, teasers, videos and graphics to share with your existing fans in the days leading up to your live stream.

And make sure to give your followers and subscribers a definitive time and place to join your stream.

Promote on ALL your channels

Share your teasers and promo posts across every single one of your social and marketing channels.

If you’re going to be streaming live on Instagram, you should still be sharing that info across other social platforms like Twitter, Facebook and even TikTok.

If you have a fan mailing list, fire an email out to your subscribers. Email marketing your music offers direct access to your audience's inbox, rather than potentially being choked by social media algorithms. So it’s always worth including in your promo strategy.

Link Songkick listings to Spotify

Did you know that you can promote your live streams and “virtual events” directly on your Spotify artist profile?

All you need to do is create a Songkick account, list your upcoming live streams and link them to your Spotify Artist Pick. You’ll find this option in your Spotify for Artists account.

You can include any online events hosted across YouTube, Instagram, Twitch and more on your profile. Once you've linked your profiles, your upcoming live streams will appear in the 'Concerts' tab of your Spotify artist page.

Spotify may also send out direct emails to your followers letting them know about your upcoming show.

Make it more than just a gig

A good way to attract more people to your show is to make it more interesting than just your live set.

You could incorporate a Q&A with fans, give a sneak peek of a new track or even play live from a unique location.

Anything you can do to make your stream more engaging and exciting is worth a try. Attempt different things and see what has the biggest impact on your audience numbers.

Start streaming early

Chances are your audience won’t always be on time. So it’s worth going live around 10-15 minutes before your stream is supposed to start and get into the best bits of your set a little while after your scheduled start time.

This gives your followers a chance to see you’re live and tune in, or if they’re a little late, they won’t miss a thing.

You could incorporate some kind of countdown timer to help viewers understand when your set will really get going. This way if they tune in early and see nothing happening, they won’t just log off straight away. They’ll be much more likely to hang around.

A quick Google search for live stream countdown timers will throw up plenty of options.

Share your link ahead of time

On certain platforms like YouTube, you can actually share the link to your live stream up to 48 hours before you’ve actually gone live. You can find out more here.

Share this link across all your channels with a definitive time and date for your live stream. Encourage your fans to save or bookmark the link at check back when it’s showtime!

Going live and streaming your shows can bring your live set directly into people’s homes. So it’s always worth doing some planning and promotion beforehand. Just remember, if you only get a couple of viewers at first, don’t be discouraged.

Keep it up, make great music, put on a killer show and fans will find you!

Read the original, full article here: Ditto Unsigned Advice
Homeless Balloonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06783672916440967755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2720028060906302972.post-15354855601379438062019-01-19T01:00:00.000+01:002019-01-19T01:02:13.559+01:00Musicians: 6 Tips to Rapidly Grow Your Instagram Following<i style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">This article is from the Sonicbids Blog, and it was written by Lauren Gill.
You’ve put in the work, slogged through all the rewrites, did all your mastering, and now it’s album release time. You have a show booked within the next month, so logic states you should make it the record release show and your official release date. Not so fast. If you’re looking for more exposure on your music beyond the traditional friends and family who come to every show, you need to be strategic. Your band is your business, and like any successful business you need to create a plan for your album launch. If you’ve invested your time and money into the recording, don’t you want to make sure it’s heard by as many people as possible?

Below are considerations we make for every album launch to insure the greatest likelihood of success, and they form a blueprint any artist can follow.

Set Your Release Date a Minimum of Three Months in the Future.
You should begin by announcing your release date 3-6 months in advance to meet media deadlines, create awareness, and begin building a buzz. This is the #1 mistake we see bands make. You’ve spent months, if not years, on your album and you just want people to hear it. I get it. However, as counterintuitive as it may seem, you greatly reduce the amount of people hearing your music by releasing it right away. Think about every band you’ve deemed successful and chances are they had a plan in place to build up to the release date. Since my company, Green Light Go Publicity, is a music PR firm, we often look at everything from the perspective of a music blogger, radio station or traditional print outlet. These outlets receive dozens, if not hundreds of emails per day, all asking for music to be heard. It’s literally impossible to listen to every band who submits in a given day. This means they often need weeks, if not months, before your music is heard, especially if the familiarity isn’t already there. It also means it often takes repeated attempts contacting a media outlet before that first listen happens.

Set Your Release Date on Friday.
In 2015, official release dates in the U.S. were changed from Tuesday to a global Friday release to help combat piracy. Even if piracy isn’t your top concern, this release date should be. It shows you take your band seriously and understand the standard business practice of the music industry. By adopting a Friday release date you’re also giving validity to your release.

Even if your record release show doesn’t fall on Friday, you should set a Friday release date. The show should be in support of the album first and foremost. If you are someone who has set your release date based on an upcoming show, this is the time to change that. Instead set your release date and then book a show at a credible venue in support of it.

Target the Right Music Bloggers.
You should be sending your music to bloggers and magazines to increase your fanbase. And that begins with targeting the right media contacts. Research the best publications for your type of music and then send it to the person who seems most likely to cover it. If you want a review, send it to the music editor or reviews editor. If it’s a specific writer, drop them a line telling them why they’ll like it based on what they’ve written about. Don’t send your rock album to a writer who only covers hip hop or electronic. No matter how good your record is, he won’t be into it and most likely the only coverage you’ll get is on his wall of shame. You should also look at the level of artists being covered at the outlet. If the outlet only covers established and celebrity acts and you’re unsigned band is hovering right around 1k followers on Facebook, the chance of that outlet covering you is slim to none.

Make Your ReverbNation Profile and Website Press Friendly.
There are certain things media outlets and music industry professionals look for when discovering a new band. You should make it easy for them if your aim is increased exposure. This should include hi-res publicity photos (at least 300dpi), bio, mp3s or streamed audio they can hear. The bio should have a strong story angle that is definitively you and hasn’t already been said before. It should not include things like, “sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before” or “we’re completely DIY.” If you need ideas for a great publicity photo, look at some of your favorite blogs to see what types of photos they post. It should tell a story about your band, look professional and catch attention. You want people to hear your music, right? So, include a single or music that is most representative of your current sound. You should NOT include your entire album or EP on your website before the release date. Instead only include the mp3 you’ve already released and then password protect the album. If you’ve received press, include press quotes with the highest profile or the best quotes at the top of your page.

Set a Single Release Date.
Here’s the good news about having to wait to release your album. It doesn’t mean you have to wait to release any music. In fact, I highly recommend releasing an mp3 within three weeks to start getting the music out there and also test how people react. If you want coverage on blogs, offer at least one downloadable mp3 through Soundcloud for their readers. This is a great way to build press early to increase both fan and media interest, which increases your chance of a successful release.

Don’t Forget About Social Media.
Look at ways you can keep your fans engaged while supporting those who have supported you. Start teasing out the single and album release on your social networks and create a banner for the page. If you don’t have access to a designer or aren’t inclined yourself, Canva provides great free templates for professional looking banners. Retweet when a fan or blog says something great about your music. Involve your fans in the process by giving sneak peeks of cover art, publicity photo shoots, videos or anything else they want to know about. Pay attention to where you receive the most engagement and make sure you plan out more of the same. Ask your fans to retweet and share your Facebook posts with their friends.

A lot more goes into releasing an album than just setting an arbitrary release date or sending it out the minute you receive the masters back. If you truly want your music to be heard, take a little extra time planning a release that will benefit from the time and energy you put into the process.
In order for YOUR playlist to grow as much as possible, you’re going to want to show up in a search on Spotify. That way your reach extends beyond your existing fanbase.
CD Baby wants to enable you to do whatever it is YOU want to do with your music career. That could mean only selling vinyl albums to fans who attend your private house concerts. For others, that could mean making tracks available on every digital platform. There’s no right strategy. You should follow the approach that works best for you and your fans.

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">But having said that, it’s worth repeating the common argument: unless you’re Taylor Swift or Adele or Radiohead, you should be cautious about putting up barriers between you and your potential fans. Adele can window her newest album, or keep it off of streaming platforms altogether, and she’s guaranteed to still get sales… because she’s ADELE; her fans will follow her wherever she leads (though notice that her videos are still on YouTube).

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">Again, unless you’re sure your fans will jump through a few hoops to get your music, I’d give it some serious thought before you decide to hold your music back from the biggest listening engine in the world.

<b style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">Can you really make money from YouTube?

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">The short answer: yes.

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">The longer answer: It’s like most things in the music industry. Then they can upload their video to YouTube, Vimeo, etc. without worrying about any copyright issues concerning the music.

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">To be clear, micro-sync licensing is not a revenue stream that’s generated through YouTube activity. When your song is licensed for micro-sync usage (long before it ever ends up on YouTube, or Vimeo, or other online platforms), you earn a small upfront fee for that license. That license gives content creators the right to then use your music in the videos they post online. So micro-sync licensing is not tied to YouTube, nor does it depend on YouTube — but if we’re talking about synching music with video, let’s be real: a majority of the people who will license your music in this way will end up putting that video on YouTube. So we can see YouTube as one of the driving forces beyind micro-sync revenue.

<span style="background-color: #fff9ee; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 15.399999618530273px;">Plus, when these creators upload videos to YouTube that contain your legally licensed music, you also earn a share of any YouTube ad revenue associated with those videos in perpetuity, through YouTube’s Content ID system. If those new “likes” are mostly random (or worse, spam accounts) and the people behind them are not actually engaged with your content, it could end up costing you more to reach your real fans.
You can set either a daily budget or a lifetime budget (meaning day-to-day spending will vary slightly, but you won’t exceed the total budget you allocate for the lifetime of the ad set).
CPM is a better choice if your goal has to do with spreading awareness and inexpensively reaching as large an audience as possible. CPC is usually a more expensive way to advertise, but the upside is that you only pay when someone actually clicks on the ad, so it can be a smarter option for conversion-oriented goals.

Ads that feature a single image, a link, and a call-to-action button (such as “learn more” or “sign up”) are common, and video ads are becoming increasingly popular.

A link ad would be a great choice if you want to drive traffic to a landing page on your band website or your online merch store, while a video ad would be effective to promote an upcoming show, tour, or new music video.
For example, if you’re testing a few different ad images within one campaign, you’ll want to go into your analytics after a few days and see which versions are performing the best for the lowest price. By turning off the versions that aren’t performing as well, your budget will get reallocated to the more successful ads, giving you the most bang for your buck.
Stream counts are a big indicator of success on Spotify, but there’s another factor that plays an enormous role: the number of times your tracks have been added to playlists.

According to BuzzFeed, one out of five plays across all streaming services happens within a playlist, and that number continues to grow. Half of Spotify’s global users listen to human-curated playlists (as opposed to algorithmic playlists), which generate more than a billion plays per week.

There’s no arguing that people love and trust playlists for music discovery. And since there are millions of playlists, you have a great opportunity as an artist to connect with super-niche audiences who truly dig your music and want to support you.

Spotify playlists are created and curated in a few different ways. The most popular playlists (like RapCaviar) are curated by Spotify’s in-house team, and are obviously the most coveted features. Other Spotify-owned playlists start with big data and are then sorted and perfected by Spotify employees.

Then there are the purely algorithm-driven, personalized playlists, like Discover Weekly and Release Radar. There are also branded playlists curated by record labels, companies, and influencers. And finally, there are user-created playlists, which anyone (including you!) can make.

What many artists may not realize is that Spotify not only tracks a myriad of metrics within the platform, but it also crawls hundreds of music blogs, keeps tabs on social media buzz, and measures it all against key tastemakers’ listening activity on Spotify. This is the engine behind playlists like Fresh Finds that can really move the needle on an independent artist’s career.

So, it makes sense to think about playlist features as just one piece of a comprehensive strategy in which all of your efforts complement one another. Press and social media mentions feed Spotify features, and vice versa.

5 steps to increase your chances of getting featured

1. Get verified

Becoming a verified artist on Spotify is really easy — just go here and fill out the short form.

That verified checkmark next to your artist name not only indicates that you’re legitimate, but also gives you more control over your artist page and access to a wealth of stats and fan insights (which we’ll dive into in the next installment of our “Streaming for Musicians” series).

Just recently, Spotify announced a new beta feature that allows all verified artists to submit unreleased music directly to their worldwide editorial team for playlist consideration. Although they’re still testing this feature and will likely modify it based on partner feedback, there’s no downside to jumping on this opportunity if you’re planning a new release soon. You can learn more about how to submit and what they’re looking for here.

2. Get active on Spotify

The more active you are on Spotify and the more your songs are being added to playlists, the more likely you are to get noticed by both human curators and the algorithm.

Make sure that you’re regularly releasing new music, even if it’s just singles or EPs. Focus on promoting your artist page and building up your Spotify following to ensure that your new tracks appears in your followers’ Release Radar.

Especially when you’re first starting out, you want to try to build up that social proof as much as you can so that you have a solid foundation for the long run. Be sure to link to your Spotify artist page from your website, share it on all your social media pages, and include it in the occasional email newsletter to your fans.

3. Start small and work your way up

While getting featured on the big, official playlists is the dream for most artists, the algorithmic playlists drive a staggering number of listens. So if you simultaneously work the algorithm and pitch niche, independent curators, you’ll be much more likely to pick up steam on Spotify and get noticed by some of the more influential curators, or even Spotify’s own editorial team.

First, set aside a chunk of time to do some listening and research. Find playlists that you think your music would genuinely be a perfect fit for. Once you’re feeling good about the list you have, make a note of which playlists are algorithmic and which are curated.

For the algorithmic playlists, your best bet is to build up as much buzz as you can, both on and off Spotify. For the human-curated playlists, find out who created them (the username will be linked right at the top, under the playlist title and description) and whether they’re open to pitches.

4. Write a compelling, personalized pitch for each curator

If you’re connected to any sort of publicist, manager, label executive, or other industry person who knows a relevant curator, definitely work those contacts as a first stop. Otherwise, track down the contact info for the curators on your list who accept submissions, then write each of them a personalized pitch explaining why your song would be perfect for their playlist.

The guidelines for this are essentially the same as when you pitch music journalists, talent buyers, or anyone else. Put yourself in their shoes, and figure out why they should care about this particular email from an artist they don’t know, especially when they have an inbox chock-full of similar emails. It’s clear what the benefit is for you, but what’s the benefit for them?

Communicate your authenticity and that you’ve actually taken the time to listen to their playlist. Keep your message fairly brief, but be specific about what you’re asking, and make it as easy as possible for them to say “yes.”

5. Keep up your online presence and broader PR efforts

If you do manage to snag a playlist feature, no matter how small, do everything you can to leverage it and keep that momentum going. Shout it from the rooftops on all your channels, and thank the curator to show them how much it means to you.

Deepen the relationship by inviting them out to a live show if you’re ever playing in their city. If it’s a big enough feature and you have a budget to work with, you may want to consider working with a PR firm to squeeze everything you can out of it and roll it into even bigger opportunities.

If you haven’t gotten any traction yet with playlist features, don’t panic or give up. It may seem like artists go viral overnight, but honing your craft and building real buzz takes time. Remember that this is just one part of your strategy, and that maintaining your online presence and working on your bigger-picture PR efforts will all feed into Spotify’s algorithm.

You can make your own playlists, too!

As you work on building your Spotify presence, don’t forget that you can also create your own public playlists and feature them on your verified artist page. It’s a great way to engage with your fans and also show support for fellow indie musicians.

You’ll want most of your playlists to be comprised of other artists’ songs, with just one or two of your own tracks thrown into each. You can curate playlists around just about any theme, but we’d recommend starting simple (and searchable) with a genre, mood, or activity.

You can even collaborate with other artists and bands on a playlist, and multiply your efforts by cross-promoting it to each other’s audiences. It’s a win-win all around!

From my thirty years as a composer and music artist, this is what I have learned. You will find thousands of web sites with advice, training, courses, teaching you to set goals, to work hard, how to beat the competition, how to be successful... But as long as you are not true to yourself and your music, all this is a waste of time and energi. If you - however - let your heart and not your lust for success create your music and guide you when promoting your music, you are already successful!
